"A Trillion Trees" - planting against climate change

Whether Himalayas, Monaco or Hamburg: Each newly planted tree helps to curb climate change: On the initiative of the Foundation Live To Love Germany, the Gyalwang Drukpa visited Europe from March 8 to 12 - initially he was guest of honor at the opening of the "A Trillion Tree"- project of the organization "Plant for the Planet"- then he traveled on to Hamburg, in order to set with the Live To Love team the first trees of the million promised in Monaco in the ground.

Launch of a historic climate change project in Monaco: Felix Finkbeiner of “„Plant for the Planet“ and Prince Albert II planted the first tree of the "A Trillion Tree" campaign in Monaco on March 9. According to a study by the university, it takes a trillion trees to reduce global warming by 1 degree. For this special occasion the Gyalwang Drukpa was invited as guest of honor accompanied by Gianna Wabner, President of Live To Love Germany. In front of well-known politicians and scientists he gave a speech (link on video) in which he announced to work hand in hand with "Plant for the Planet". The Gyalwang Drukpa promised to plant at least one million trees in a short time with friends and sponsors worldwide.

From Monaco to Hamburg-Steilshoop - action in cooperation with NABU

Only one day later he began to put his promise directly into action. From Monaco the Gyalwang Drukpa traveled on to Hamburg. There, the Live To Love - Germany team awaited him with joy and welcomed him to an eventful program. Parallel to the launch in Monaco, the first tree planting campaign in Hamburg-Steilshoop was already prepared in Hamburg by the team members in cooperation with the NABU.

The Gyalwang Drukpa planted three European white elms along the Osterbek, emphasizing the importance of not just talking about environmental and climate protection but to do something "a million times in the near future". He sees a realistic chance for lasting influence and change in the climate: "The awareness of how important it is now to plant trees for the next generation has grown enormously. Parents explain it to the children and also children explain it to their parents - all over the world.”
Television crews of the Hamburg Journal and NoahTV had come to film this significant moment.

Planting Elms at the Altonaer Balkon and Ohmoorgraben

From Steilshoop we went on to the Altonaer balcony: The district office had provided at this place with a wide view of the Elbe five planting locations. On the high bank of the Elbe, the Gyalwang Drukpa and the Kung Fu nuns gave other elms a place in the ground.
In parallel, Live To Love team members planted ten trees at the Ohmoorgraben in Hamburg's Niendorf district.
Live To Love - Germany would like to thank Fielmann AG, who donated the 18 trees for the actions this weekend.

Paneldiscussion in European XFEL: Science meets Spirituality

To top off the visit, the European XFEL in Hamburg-Schenefeld had invited the Gyalwang Drukpa to a panel discussion. Previously, he visited the underground experimental hall and the X-ray laser tunnel of the research facility.

Panellists of the round entitled "Connecting Worlds - Science Meets Spirituality" were beside the Gyalwang Drukpa the European XFEL managing director Prof. Robert Feidenhans'l, the physicist Adrian Mancuso of XFEL as well as the biophysicist Prof. Arwen Pearson and the musicologist Prof. Rolf Bader, both University of Hamburg.

Topics were synergies between modern science and spirituality, and what you can learn from each other. The event was led by NDR journalist Jan Ehlert and Rosemary Wilson of the European XFEL Communications Department.
